Whether just getting started with your accounting career or continuing to build on your strong foundation, selecting a firm to work for is an important first step. There are many accounting firms in the industry today, so how do you know which one is best for you? Large and small, accounting firms across the country offer somewhat similar services to their clients. What sets them apart? What makes a particular firm the “right” next step for you?
At Spicer Jeffries we believe that a firm should fit an individual at both a career and personal level. Success of a firm is driven by the daily work and attitudes of its employees. Clients will see a final product, but the “daily grind” of the job is what really makes or breaks a company. In order to better serve the human capital that has helped build and continuously makes Spicer Jeffries LLP the successful firm it is today, the partners have established several key areas of importance to drive the success of our employees.
Starting your career at Spicer Jeffries is an exciting time. For incoming staff that are recent graduates or new to the accounting profession, your first months at the firm will consist of “Incoming Class Training.” At Spicer, we feel that creating a strong bond between incoming employees creates the foundation for long lasting success and happiness. For this reason, the partnership has developed Spicer Jeffries University (SJU) to help in preparing new employees for the challenges ahead and the intricacies of the firm’s focus on the securities industry.
This intense training program has been developed from years of experience in training new employees and follows the fundamental values and beliefs of the firm. SJU allows individuals to begin to feel comfortable in their new work environment, learn about the firm’s history and expectations, understand their responsibilities to the firm and its clients, as well as begin building relationships with their incoming class and senior firm members. Spicer Jeffries University (SJU) consists of several core programs that culminate in the individual’s ability to conduct a financial statement audit, and then to prepare corporate and personal tax returns on their own. In order to ensure success, SJU places students into “live” situations, using past client’s actual data to create real-life situations that they will face when working with clients in and out of the SJ offices. All of the SJU core programs are led by experienced Spicer staff with years of experience behind them. Many of the current program leaders are staff members who themselves went through SJU and now have the chance to enhance the program and pass on their knowledge.
Spicer believes that as a professional in the field of public accounting, an individual needs to be well rounded in both audit and tax. As such, your first two years with the firm will be spent dealing in both areas to help you gain knowledge and also decide which area you prefer best. At the firm you
will gain invaluable experience working in the field alongside senior members. You will be exposed to all facets of an audit engagement, taxation, related tax issues, and direct client contact.
As your career advances at Spicer, you will move into a specialization, either audit or tax. Selecting which path to continue forward on is not a decision employees must make on their own. Each individual’s direct managers are involved in the discussion, as well as the partners, offering their own unique thoughts and experiences as assistance. Following your choice to pursue the tax or audit path, an employee may further progress in their specialization by advancing into a supervisory role, followed by manager and then director.
As individuals progress along their career path, Spicer Jeffries encourages the pursuit of professional licensing and memberships amongst your regular work. The firm believes deeply in our employees and their growth; as such, the firm offers training, financial assistance, and other opportunities to successfully complete the requirements necessary for success.
Spicer also provides continuing education opportunities for its employees. Throughout the year, employees are engaged in different programs and events that directly contribute to their professional growth and expertise in the accounting industry. For instance, the firm encourages every employee to be a current and upstanding member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The partners believe that every individual’s career potential is only limited by the amount of time and effort put towards it. At Spicer Jeffries it is our goal to help each employee realize their career goals, as well as their personal life goals.

Throughout the year, Spicer Jeffries is host to several information sessions, usually conducted in association with a campus’ Career Services department. These sessions are generally hosted by two or more Spicer team members, giving individuals a chance to interact on a personal level with the firm. These sessions also provide a terrific opportunity for networking, submitting resumes, and interacting with possible employers in a relaxed setting.
Spicer Jeffries regularly visits college campuses to meet with potential candidates for new staff positions. Individual interviews are generally preceded by an information session. We work closely with the campus Career Services department to arrange individual interviews following information sessions.
